Palermo

Palermo is the capital of Sicily, overlooking its namesake gulf in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its port provides naval connections with other Italian metropolitan cities such as Cagliari, Genoa and Naples and with Tunis.

Palermo, inside the Royal Palace, is home to the Sicilian Regional Assembly, the oldest working parliamentary assembly in the world . Palermo's 12th-century Cathedral houses royal tombs, while the imposing neoclassical Teatro Massimo is famous for opera performances. Also in the center are the Norman Palace, a royal palace dating from the 9th century, and the Palatine Chapel, with Byzantine mosaics.
